Emily Scown is a dancer/choreographer from Odessa, TX. She has been dancing since she was 3 years old, studying styles including: ballet, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, hip-hop, pom, modern and improvisation. In high school, Emily was on the Panther Paws Dance Team where she held the positions of Jr. Lieutenant her junior year and Captain her senior year while also earning the title of State Champions and National Champions with her team that year. During her time on the dance team, Emily began working on her choreography with the help of Kristin Carter and through this experience, her love for choreography began to grow. She continued to explore this new passion by attending college at Texas Woman’s University and majoring in Dance.
During her time at the university, Emily was selected to be a part of three dance companies in the Dallas area: Dallas Dance Company, Pedestrian Dance Movement and Renegades Elite Company. The Dallas Dance Company provided training in all styles including hip-hop, jazz, lyrical and tap. As a member of the company, the dancers were showcased in an end of year show. Pedestrian Dance Movement focused on contemporary/modern movement and story-telling through the use of musicality and movement. Emily danced with Pedestrian Dance Movement for two years and danced as one of the principal dancers in the show her second year with the company. Her last year of college, she was invited to audition for the renegades which is a hip-hop crew that performed at competitions including World of Dance. She had the opportunity to compete with them at World of Dance in Chicago as well as in Dallas, Tx. In addition, she also taught for Crowd Pleasers Dance Company, teaching summer dance camps to high school dance teams. Through all of these experiences, Emily has grown tremendously in all styles of dance and has been able to use this growth in her teaching and choreography. Emily’s teaching and choreography experiences are numerous as she has been working with high school teams for many years. She has been choreographing for the Permian Panther Paws for the past five years. During this time she has choreographed Contemporary routines, a JV Jazz Routine and several officer routines, all of which were awarded National Champion titles and received choreography awards. She has also choreographed three solo routines that were solo finalist at the national level. Emily continues to choreograph for both the Varsity and Jr. Varsity teams at Permian High School and teaches classes whenever she is in town. In addition to working with Permian, she also taught private dance camps at Frenship High School in Luboock, TX for three years, where she choreographed pep-rally routines for the team to use during the school year. Since graduating from Texas Women’s University with her degree in Dance, Emily moved to Los Angeles, CA to pursue her dreams of being a professional dancer. She trained at prestigious dance studios, taking classes from well-known choreographers including Jaci Royal, Sabrina Phillip, Jojo Gomez, etc. Soon after being in LA to pursue this dream, she realized her real passion was being a part of a company, while focusing on choreography and training younger dancers. Emily is very excited to have the opportunity to come back to her roots and share her love and passion for dance with those in the area. She loves watching dancers improve and master things they never thought they could. She really takes the time to focus on style and movement, while also working hard to make sure dancers are able to properly execute technical skills. It is very important to her to teach her dancers to work hard for what they want instead of expecting it to be handed to them. This was a valuable lesson she has learned through her many experiences and truly knows the importance of understanding it. In addition, Emily wants to teach her students to be good people, be humble and thankful for their gifts and to always support others on their team or in classes. Most of all, Emily wants to teach her dancers to dance for God’s glory and to use their talents to glorify him no matter what. email: emily@encroixdanceacademy.com |
